Today, being 626 Day, is the perfect day to learn that a live-action sequel to Lilo & Stitch is now in development. The Walt Disney Studios says that Stitch couldn’t keep the secret any longer, and we don’t blame him. Surprises are fun!
Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch hit theaters on May 23, 2025, following a premiere at the El Capitan Theatre on May 17, continuing Disney’s wave of hybrid live-action/CGI remakes. The story follows the familiar journey of Lilo and her mischievous alien friend, Stitch, reimagined with impressive visual effects and performances.
The film shattered box office expectations right out of the gate. Opening over Memorial Day weekend, it grossed a record-breaking $183 million domestically and $341.7 million worldwide over the four-day holiday. Its traditional three-day opening brought in $146 million, a whopping 2.68x multiple over its production budget. According to Box Office Mojo, Lilo & Stitch has continued to dominate the summer box office. It has now climbed past $390 million domestically, with a global haul of over $914 million. While critics remain mixed, mainly around some changes that were made to the story, audiences have favored the film, with an “A” CinemaScore and strong ticket sales.
It’s clear that Stitch’s return to the big screen is resonating with fans old and new alike, and we’re happy that a sequel is coming!
