New Documentary About Julie Andrews Coming to Disney+ in August

For many Disney fans, it’s hard to imagine childhood without Julie Andrews. She entertained us by gliding down into Cherry Tree Lane with her umbrella, helping the von Trapp family find the joy in music, and guiding a shy princess in Genovia. Her performances have had a lasting impact on audiences of all ages around the world.

Now, Disney+ is preparing to celebrate her remarkable career with a brand-new documentary arriving globally in 2027.

The yet-to-be-titled film promises to be the definitive look at the life of Disney Legend Julie Andrews, tracing her journey from her early years performing in British vaudeville to becoming one of the most beloved entertainers of all time. Along the way, the documentary will explore not only the successes fans know so well, but also the personal challenges and resilience that shaped her life behind the scenes.

According to Disney, the documentary will feature rare archival footage that has never been released publicly, along with new interviews that offer a more personal look at the woman behind unforgettable roles in Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and The Princess Diaries.

Disney says the project is being directed by acclaimed filmmaker R.J. Cutler, who says the documentary goes far beyond Andrews’ iconic performances.

“Julie Andrews is not simply a beloved performer,” Cutler said. “She is a cultural touchstone, a figure woven into the fabric of how generations of people understand joy, resilience, and grace. Most people don’t know the extraordinary challenges she’s had to overcome throughout her life, all of which we delve into in this film. To sit with Julie, to be allowed into her inner world, to watch her reflect on a life that has shaped so many other lives, was an experience I will forever cherish. She gave us her full self, without armor, without pretense. And what we found was someone even more extraordinary than the icon. I am humbled by her talent, in awe of her strength and honored by her trust.”

Disney hasn’t shared the documentary’s official title just yet, but as a fan who has followed Andrews throughout her career, this news is pretty exciting. Andrews’ work includes stage, film, television, and children’s literature, earning countless awards.

The documentary is being produced by This Machine, part of Sony Pictures Television. Cutler also serves as a producer alongside Trevor Smith, Elise Pearlstein, Jane Cha Cutler, and Jonathan Ruane, with Mark Blatty serving as executive producer.

Disney says the documentary will premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2027, with additional details, including its official title and release date, expected to be announced closer to launch.
