In celebration of its tenth anniversary, the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco will be hosting an exclusive original exhibition chronicling Mickey Mouse and his influence on art and entertainment.

“Mickey Mouse: From Walt to the World” will be presented in the Diane Disney Miller Exhibition Hall beginning May 16, 2019.

The collection has been guest curated by animator Andreas Deja and includes more that 400 objects. Pieces include rare and never-before-seen sketches, character model sheets, concept art, nostalgic merchandise, and vintage photographs, plus some of Mickey’s animated short films.

Deja said of the collection:

I have been collecting and studying classic Disney animation drawings for a long time. Among them are very rare sketches of Mickey Mouse by master animators like Fred Moore, Frank Thomas, and others. Each artist applied their personal style to Mickey, not only in the way he is drawn, but also in he way he moves and acts. By analyzing these beautiful drawings, I am constantly reminded of how wonderful and magical character animation can be.

The collection also includes pop art from iconic artists like Gottfried Helnwein, Damien Hirst, Wayne Thiebaud, and Andy Worhol. Contemporary artists Lorelay Bove, Tennessee Loveless, Eric Robinson, and muralist Sirron Norris are represented as well.
