Disney’s Animal Kingdom has another new resident to meet. Prospect, a male African painted dog, has officially joined the pack at the park and is settling into his new home on the savanna.
Disney introduced Prospect on Instagram, sharing that he is already making himself comfortable in his new home. Guests have the opportunity to potentially spot him while traveling through the savanna aboard Kilimanjaro Safaris.
Also known as African wild dogs, painted dogs are easily recognizable by their distinctive coats. Each animal has its own unique pattern of black, white and tan markings, meaning no two painted dogs look exactly alike. Their large, rounded ears also serve an important purpose, helping the animals hear across long distances while releasing heat in their warm native environment. Painted dogs are highly social animals that live in close-knit packs. Members work together while hunting, caring for pups and protecting their territory.
Prospect’s arrival comes shortly after World Painted Dog Day on August 26. To mark the occasion, the Disney Conservation Fund highlighted its more than 20 years of support for Painted Dog Conservation, an organization working to protect the species and its habitat in Zimbabwe.
This work is important as African painted dogs are currently classified as endangered. Fewer than 7,000 are estimated to remain in the wild, primarily across portions of sub-Saharan Africa.
Disney has not shared additional details about Prospect yet, including his age or where he previously lived.
Prospect is the latest notable animal arrival at Disney’s Animal Kingdom this summer. Bakari, a 21-year-old western lowland gorilla, recently made his public debut as the new silverback of the family troop along Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.
