We were invited by Walt Disney World to preview Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, a new 4D show debuting November 7, 2025, at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The experience takes over the Tree of Life Theater, replacing It’s Tough to Be a Bug! after more than two decades under the park’s iconic tree.
The attraction was developed through a partnership between Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Animation Studios. The same team of animators who created the original Zootopia films also worked on this project, giving the visuals the same energy and humor as the movies. Members of the original voice cast returned as well, so all the characters sound just right!
A New Story Inside the Tree of Life
Taking a look at the attraction’s new marquee and queue signs, each are carved and vibrantly painted. Funnily, Flash, the world’s slowest DMV worker, can be seen above the Lightning Lane sign.
The queue still boasts some of the best views of the Tree of Life, despite newly installed netting structures obstructing some of the sculpted caverns:
On your way into the theater entrance, you’ll find new posters relating the attraction’s backstory, ultimately re-writing the history of the Tree of Life.
Then, you pick up your orange “CarrotVision” glasses before heading into the show’s waiting area…
I didn’t get to spend *too* much time in here during my preview, but I can already tell this is where most of the Zootopia gags and humor shines. There’s a large display of “Pawdora” jewelry cases, as well as punny posters and boards, similar to the theater’s historic predecessor.
The first thing I noticed was the large sphere of “dung”, leftover from It’s Tough to Be a Bug. Paw prints are now seen all around it – while I’m glad they kept this large piece in the area, I’ll just pretend it’s no longer from giant dung beetles…
Stepping into the theater, you’ll spot the familiar swirled and gnarled roots with thoughtful lighting elements. You (still) truly feel like you’re inside the Tree of Life.
To the right of the theater screen, a new Audio-Animatronic figure of Officer Clawhauser appears for much of the show. His movement, expression, and design are excellent an impressive evolution of Disney’s recent animatronic technology. It’s easy to find yourself glancing back and forth between him and the screen (I had to remind myself to not just stare at the Animatronic!).
In Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, guests join the citizens of Zootopia as they celebrate “Zoogether Day,” a citywide festival uniting all of the film’s biomes. The show takes the form of a “CarrotVision 3D” livestream, where Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and a host of familiar characters prepare for a day of performances, parades, and a concert from Gazelle.
Naturally, things don’t go as planned. When the feed is disrupted, Judy and Nick step in to solve the mystery and save the celebration. The show ends with a message about how small acts of kindness can create larger positive changes.
4D Effects and Family Appeal
As a 4D show, Zootopia: Better Zoogether! blends 3D visuals with physical effects in the theater. Guests will feel gentle sprays of water, bursts of bubbles, fog, and even the familiar “critter crawl” beneath the seats. These effects are handled with a lighter touch than before, making the experience more fun for children (and scaredy cat adults… like myself) and far less intense than It’s Tough to Be a Bug! was known to be.
The humor, timing, and personality of the Zootopia world translate well here. The animation looks crisp and lively, though slightly muted by the darker tint of the 3D glasses. Overall, it feels fresh and well produced; an obvious upgrade from the aging equipment of the former show.
How It Fits Into Animal Kingdom
Whether Zootopia: Better Zoogether! truly belongs in Animal Kingdom is something fans will likely keep debating. The park has always focused on the human connection to nature, conservation, and the interdependence of living things. The original It’s Tough to Be a Bug! may have been dated, but it fit that message by showing how insects play a vital role in the natural world.
The show’s creators stressed how important it was to them to appropriately fit the show within the theme and original idea behind Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Better Zoogether‘s theme of cooperation across biomes reflects the same idea of interconnectedness that defines Animal Kingdom’s message, even if its setting (a bustling animal metropolis) feels a little removed from the park’s more natural tone. The creators said they view the show as “Animal Kingdom–based,” with the story designed to highlight how each species depends on others to thrive. That concept ties back to the park’s core purpose, even if the execution leans more toward fun than education.
Final Thoughts
Zootopia: Better Zoogether! is a light, enjoyable show that families will appreciate. The effects are playful, the visuals are well-crafted, and the characters are as funny and charming as ever. It’s a welcome change of pace for those looking to cool off and relax for a few minutes in the middle of their Animal Kingdom day.
Some may miss the deeper connection to nature that It’s Tough to Be a Bug! offered, but it’s hard to deny that this new version feels more current and accessible. It’s an update that makes sense, even if it doesn’t fully capture the park’s original spirit.
In the end, Zootopia: Better Zoogether! succeeds as a fun, family-friendly addition to the park; one that celebrates community, teamwork, and the idea that everyone has a role to play, whether in Zootopia or the real world.
