Have you ever been walking around a Disney theme park and stopped in your tracks as a familiar Disney character is being drawn on the pavement right before your eyes? This special kind of magic is always such a treat to happen upon because it’s so unexpected – especially if you’ve never seen it before. This type of art is so unique because it’s created with nothing but a broom and a dustpan full of water.
These creations go back to Walt Disney’s idea of making “something out of nothing.” While water artists handle regular custodial duties for most of their day, a select few are specially trained to bring their artistic talents to the streets of Disney, creating these temporary masterpieces. Occasionally, I’ve seen a custodial cast member ask an inquisitive child if they’d like to become a ‘Junior Character Water Artist’ as they instruct the guests how to draw their own.

If you’re lucky, you might run into a water artist “painting” a special character like the Hatbox Ghost!
