Disney, We Are Pleading: Bring Back the Citrus Swirl

Seriously, please. For longtime Walt Disney World fans, the Citrus Swirl has been a sweet staple. First introduced in the 1970s, this refreshingly tart treat once featured at Magic Kingdom’s Sunshine Tree Terrace was a frozen orange juice swirled with vanilla soft-serve. The tangy-sweet flavor combination made it a unique combo in the world of frozen Disney treats, and a worthy rival to the ever-popular DOLE Whip.

However, the Citrus Swirl has had a slightly-sour history. It quietly disappeared and reappeared several times over the years, only to be officially discontinued once again in April 2024. Since then, the Sunshine Tree Terrace has offered an Orange Cream alternative, made with DOLE Whip Orange and vanilla soft-serve. This alternative is fine, and offers those with plant-based diet limitations something different, but it does lack the bold citrus punch of the original.

In the months that followed its removal, many of us citrus lovers held onto those glimmers of hope. And yet, the Citrus Swirl image remains on the My Disney Experience app when mobile ordering from the Sunshine Tree Terrace.

In the past, Cast Members in Adventureland cited equipment issues or ingredient supply problems as reasons for the treat’s absence. But now, over a year later since the last check-in, there’s been no official update, and Disney has remained quiet on the Citrus Swirl’s status.

A few months back, the @DisneyEats Instagram account posted about entering their ‘orange food era’ with a series of orange treats found at Walt Disney World, including many seasonal Halloween food items, but with the current orange DOLE Whip at the forefront. There are many like-minded individuals in the comments asking about the Citrus Swirl, and if it can return already:

What makes the Citrus Swirl’s continued absence even more surprising is the enduring popularity of its mascot – the Little Orange Bird. This cheery little guy remains a star during EPCOT’s Flower & Garden Festival, gracing full merchandise collections, as well as his own non-festival merch features throughout the year. Yet, his signature treat – the one that helped make him iconic – is nowhere to be found.

Here’s an idea: if the Citrus Swirl really is a difficult iced treat to maintain all year, how about featuring it as a Flower & Garden limited-time menu item?

What drove me to [again] plead Disney today is the sight of this year’s Flower & Garden Festival merchandise collection, featuring an orange and white soft-serve near the adorable icon, and it feels like an intentional reference. You can spot this on both the festival’s graphic t-shirt and Spirit Jersey alongside the Orange Bird:

Keep in mind, there is no orange-flavored DOLE Whip featured at this year’s festival, so what else could this be besides a callback to the original Citrus Swirl treat?

And did you know the Orange Bird was once a walk-around character at Disney World? It’s true! And now this year, he’ll be featured on a Flower & Garden Festival-exclusive button-down shirt.

While there’s no indication from Disney that the Citrus Swirl is returning anytime soon, I’ll still hold onto hope. After all, this has happened before. The Citrus swirl was gone for years before reappearing… and disappearing again. Maybe one day, this classic treat will swirl its way back into our hearts. Until then, we’ll keep asking (and dreaming) of that tangy, creamy comeback. Do you miss the Citrus Swirl, or are the DOLE Whip alternatives good enough for you?
