A brand-new experience celebrating the heart and history of Disney Animation is officially coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Set to open in 2026, the all-new Magic of Disney Animation will replace Star Wars Launch Bay (finally) in Animation Courtyard.
The reimagined space will transport guests into the world of animation with interactive experiences, original artwork, and character magic. Designed as a whimsical interpretation of a working animation studio (where the animators have temporarily stepped out) the building will feature a stylized version of Mickey’s iconic Sorcerer Hat at its entrance; an homage to the real Walt Disney Animation building in Burbank, CA.
Inside, guests will enjoy:
- An interactive short film experience
- The return of Animation Academy, where guests can learn to draw Disney characters
- A colorful new play area called Drawn to Wonderland, inspired by Mary Blair’s artwork for Alice in Wonderland featuring larger-than-life set pieces, including oversized flowers, a Mad Tea Party playset, and explorative zones themed to the Tulgey Wood
- Plenty of character greeting opportunities
- Outdoor shaded courtyard area designed for relaxation and surprise character appearances
Disney has confirmed that Disney Junior Play & Dance!, also located in the area, will close on September 25, 2025 to begin the transformation. The entire Animation Courtyard is expected to evolve as part of the new experience’s rollout.
A Look Back at Star Wars Launch Bay
Before this transformation, the Animation Courtyard space has had a long and evolving history. Originally home to the Magic of Disney Animation, the space opened in 1989 with Disney-MGM Studios. For years, guests could watch live animation in progress and explore how Disney films were created.
In July 2015, the original experience closed. Just months later, Star Wars Launch Bay opened on in December 2015. It offered fans a closer look at Star Wars props, costumes, concept art, and character meet-and-greets. The Launch Bay served as a transitional offering ahead of the eventual opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which has since become the franchise’s main home in the park.
With Galaxy’s Edge 2019 opening and drawing crowds elsewhere in the park, Launch Bay’s relevance has gradually faded, and left fans questioning what was next for the space for a few years now.
Returning to Disney’s Creative Roots
