New breeds of chickens added to Affection Section at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

A few new species of chickens have been added to the Affection Section of Rafiki’s Planet Watch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  The “Affection Section” is where young and old alike have an opportunity to interact with the animals. At first, they appear to be the usual petting zoo variety of animals, but you’ll discover that they are exotic breeds of sheep, goats, deer, pigs, etc.

Guests will now also get to see Ameraucana chickens, silver leghorn chickens, and naked-neck turkens.

Amereaucana chickens lay blue eggs and are social birds. Leghorn chickens grow slowly and are currently a recovering breed. This breed originated in Italy.

The naked-neck turkens are actually chickens as well, but because of their appearance, were once thought to be a mix of the two birds. Their necks are bare, because the breed has a genetic mutation that prohibits feathers from growing in that area.
