Tom Sawyer Island & Rivers of America to be Transformed Into New ‘Cars’ Area

Over the weekend at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Experience, Josh D’Amaro announced an expansion in Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World based Pixar Animation Studios’ Cars franchise. We know that two new attractions are coming and that work will begin in early 2025.

Many folks immediately began to wonder where these attractions would go as Frontierland doesn’t have a ton of free space. In fact, in the Honda Center Saturday night when D’Amaro said this, I turned to Hannah and said, “You don’t think they’d fill in the Rivers of America, do you?” We didn’t think they would, but Monday morning, Disney announced how they’ll be making way for these new attractions.

To make way for a completely new frontier, the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be transformed into vast and rugged terrains for a rally race with some of the world’s most iconic racers.

We are thrilled to create this original Cars adventure and put our guests in the driver’s seat as we—quite literally—explore a new frontier in Frontierland. Part of pioneering this new story includes tapping into the themes of exploration and adventure that inspire so many of us to keep propelling forward. Anytime we touch Magic Kingdom, we recognize the massive responsibility that exists to get it right and tell stories that connect with our guests.

Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World Portfolio Executive Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering

Disney says that before work revves into high gear next year, guests will have ample time to experience Frontierland’s charm and nostalgia as it is today.
