As a little girl who grew up with The Lion King, I’ve got all eyes on the new movie that features Mufasa in his origin story. Mufasa: The Lion King is coming to theatres in just a few days now, and there is so much to learn about where some of our favorite characters in this story have come from. Earlier this week, we shared with you a behind-the-scenes look at some of the cast working in the sound booth to bring the voices of these characters to life. Well, since then, a second clip featuring just the voices of Seth Rogen & Billy Eichner as Pumbaa and Timon has been released, and I noticed something that sparked my curiosity. I’ll let you watch it first before I spoil it:
Did you hear that? Could this be the first little Easter egg that Disney is dropping about an upcoming project? Could a Timon and Pumbaa origin story be next on the agenda? I started to think more about how feasible this could be. On the one hand, these two loveable, quirky characters say a lot of things that don’t necessarily have a hidden meaning, but when it comes to Disney, I find that a lot of what they do is intentional, even if we only find out years down the line. Could this booth-to-screen clip be a clue of what’s to come for these two adventurous pals?
While somewhat external to the main storyline of the original movie, for many, Timon and Pumbaa are the heart and soul of the film, the key to unlocking the confidence, friendship, and bravery that eventually brought Simba back to Pride Rock. For many, both the characters and their trademark Hakuna Matata tune are the first things that come to mind when you mention the 1994 film’s title.
Would you be interested in a prequel origin story for Timon and Pumbaa?
I could be completely wrong, but my track record for predicting some of this stuff is pretty solid. Remember when I thought the Muppets were coming to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster almost 18 months ago?
