“Walt Disney – A Magical Life” opens tomorrow, on the 70th anniversary of Disneyland. The show features an advanced, lifelike Audio-Animatronic of Walt Disney. Regardless of how you may feel about the figure’s likeness to the man behind the magical conglomerate, you may have spotted an odd little symbol on the tie of the new Walt Disney animatronic.

This is not a random design, nor a Chinese character; it’s the emblem of Smoke Tree Ranch, a community of privately-owned homes and cottage rentals in Palm Springs, which held deep personal significance for Walt himself.

Smoke Tree Ranch was a desert retreat where Walt and his family vacationed for years. He loved the peace and simplicity of the area, and he even owned a home there.

Walt enjoyed several years at his Smoke Tree Ranch home, but when his dream of building Disneyland took shape, he sold the property -along with other assets- to help fund the park’s down payment.
Walt was so fond of the ranch that he often wore ties embroidered with the ranch’s logo: a stylized smoke tree leaf made up of the letters STR for Smoke Tree Ranch. It became a quiet but consistent part of his wardrobe.

That same Smoke Tree Ranch symbol has long been subtly honored across Disney history. In fact, if you look closely at the iconic Partners statue in Disney Parks around the world, which features Walt holding Mickey Mouse’s hand, you’ll see the STR logo sculpted onto Walt’s tie; an intentional nod to his personal life and values.

Let’s zoom in a bit…

The symbol also appeared in the 2013 film Saving Mr. Banks, where Tom Hanks, portraying Walt Disney, wears a tie with the same logo in several scenes, another layer of authenticity added by the filmmakers.

Including the Smoke Tree Ranch logo on the new Walt animatronic pays tribute to the man behind the magic, quietly reminding guests of the real Walt’s connection to family, nature, and personal retreat.
