They grow up so fast…

Disney’s Animal Kingdom recently celebrated a special milestone: the first birthday of Bakso, a male Sumatran tiger born at the park in 2024. Over the past year, Bakso has grown from a tiny, curious cub into a confident young tiger, now weighing over 140 pounds.

Bakso is the offspring of mother Sohni and father Conrad. From his earliest days, he has been monitored and cared for by a dedicated team of animal specialists, including veterinarians, nutritionists, and behavioral experts. His primary caregiver, animal keeper Sarah, has been responsible for daily care, feeding, enrichment activities, and health monitoring since his birth. She describes the experience of working with Bakso as both joyful and educational.

As part of his birthday celebration, Bakso was treated to some of his favorite enrichment items, including goat’s milk and special ice treats designed to keep him mentally and physically stimulated. These enrichment activities are crucial in helping animals like Bakso exhibit natural behaviors and remain healthy in their habitats.

Michelle, a Behavioral Husbandry Manager at the park, highlighted the importance of voluntary training in Bakso’s care. He is learning to voluntarily participate in health check-ups, which reduces stress and enhances his overall well-being. Each training and enrichment session is customized to suit his unique personality and developmental stage.

Bakso’s birth plays a key role in conservation. Fewer than 600 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild, and Disney participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan to ensure the long-term survival of this critically endangered species. Additionally, the Disney Conservation Fund has contributed more than $4.5 million toward global tiger conservation efforts, including habitat protection and anti-poaching initiatives
