Epcot removes Confederate flag from the American Adventure attraction

A Confederate flag has been removed from the American Adventure attraction at Walt Disney World’s Epcot. The flag was in a display of 40 American flags from throughout our nation’s history. The version of the flag that was removed was the third flag used by the Confederacy and is described as: “blue cross with white stars on a red background is displayed in the upper-left-hand corner, bordered by a field of white with a thick, red stripe at the other end.”

The use of the Confederate flag has come under scrutiny lately as a symbol of racism after nine people were killed at a black church in Charleston, S.C. by a white man. He was found when someone noticed his Confederate license plate; a website was found later with pictures of him posing with the Confederate flag.

South Carolina and Alabama are considering removing the flag from memorials that are on government property. Walmart and Amazon have also decided to stop selling anything with the Confederate flag on it.

The American Adventure show is a look through America’s history and does include “references to the Civil War, slavery and abolitionists, including Frederick Douglass.”
