Hey howdy hey! This week’s vintage Disney roundup heads to the second star to the right in honor of Peter Pan, which recently marked 73 years since its 1953 theatrical release. While J.M. Barrie first introduced the boy who wouldn’t grow up in his 1904 stage play (later adapted into the 1911 novel Peter and Wendy) it was Walt Disney’s animated version that firmly planted Neverland into pop culture for generations of moviegoers.
Disney had pursued the rights since the 1930s, finally bringing the story to the screen as the studio’s 14th animated feature. With its vibrant mid-century color styling, shaped by artists like Mary Blair, and instantly iconic characters like Captain Hook and Tinker Bell, the 1953 film remains one of Walt Disney Animation’s defining classics.
