Who is the New Character at the Disneyland Resort?

Hey friends, we are taking a closer look at a recent addition to the Disneyland Resort character lineup. A truly classic face has finally stepped out of the animation vault and into the parks, and yes, we’re talking about Humphrey the Bear. After more than seven decades as a beloved, if slightly obscure, part of Disney animation history, Humphrey has made his Disney Parks debut at Storytellers Cafe inside Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa as part of the Donald’s Tales of Adventure dinner buffet, celebrating Disney California Adventure’s 25th Anniversary.

For those who might be scratching their heads, Humphrey isn’t part of the Country Bear Jamboree crew, even though it’s a very understandable assumption when you see a bear wandering around a Disney Resort. Instead, he’s one of the classic stars of the Disney shorts from the 1950s. He first appeared as an unnamed character, way back in the Goofy short Hold That Pose, and went on to feature in several Donald Duck cartoons before headlining his own pair of shorts, like Hooked Bear and In the Bag.

Since his screen days, Humphrey found a little home in Disney California Adventure with Humphrey’s Service & Supplies, a shop subtly nodding to his snack-stealing, hibernation-chasing antics in Brownstone National Park. Even so, most guests didn’t clock the correlation, and it wasn’t until last week that he appeared as an in-person walk-around character. Some dedicated Disney fans are already calling for him to make the leap across the country to Walt Disney World, wondering if he might find a permanent home or regular meet-and-greet beyond this limited celebration. Others are still trying to work out who Humphrey even is when they see him wandering around.

Of course, this raises the big question: can Humphrey the Bear carve out his own niche in a world dominated by the Fab Five like Mickey and Minnie Mouse? Or will he be more like Duffy the Disney Bear, adored by a smaller but incredibly passionate group of fans, yet never quite breaking into the mainstream park character lineup? Only time will tell, but for now, it’s pretty magical seeing this classic character finally get his moment in the spotlight.
