WESH.com reports that “about 500 information technology workers at Disney” were laid off on Friday, January 30. The employees did not want to be interview on camera by the news station, in hopes that they could find other jobs with the company. In the Team Disney parking lot, employees were seen carrying boxes to their cars.
Many of these cast members helped in the development of MyMagic+ and MagicBands. Many Disney IT jobs have been outsourced internationally since 2012, when India-based HCL took over Disney’s IT contract.
Jacquee Wahler, Disney spokeswoman, said, “We are restructuring our global technology organization to support future innovation and new capabilities and will work with leading technical firms to maintain our existing systems.” She also said that there were not 500 layoffs, but didn’t give an exact number.
