According to the Orlando Sentinel, on Thursday an apparent sinkhole opened up only 3 miles from Walt Disney World on Interstate 4 south. It has been determined to be stable according to Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jen Horton. The FDOT will be surveying the area over the weekend.
The hole sunk down 10-feet, and was about 15-feet wide in diameter. Fortunately, the hole opened far enough away from the road that no one was hurt and traffic was not delayed.
Florida is the state with the nation with the most sinkholes. According to an article in The Atlantic, this is due to Florida’s peninsula being made up by carbonate rock. Water can be stored in carbonate rock, which can dissolve the rock over time causing the ground to collapse.
