Asked to Cover Native American Caricature; High School Band Cancels Disney

A high school band has canceled their upcoming performance at Walt Disney World after they were approached by the company about covering up their logo. The Venice High School band will not appear as scheduled on Main Street, U.S.A November 12, opting to cancel the performance, though not the entire trip, instead of grant a request from Disney to cover part of their uniform showing a Native American caricature as their logo.

“Our band deserves to be honored and celebrated without having to change our name or cover our identity,” Venice High Principal Zoltan Kerestely addressed parents in a letter. “When I see them perform, I am filled with pride and admiration for the work each student, Mr. Wing, and parents put into the program.”

The cancelation comes on the back of earlier controversy when another group conducted a questionable performance that was deemed offensive to Native Americans.
