Disney’s live-action musical adaptation has remained #1 at the box office through its second week. Beauty and the Beast managed to outperform newcomers Power Rangers, CHiPs, and Life, all of which debuted this past weekend.
While Disney had estimated weekend sales up to $85 million for the film, it actually brought in $88.3 million (at U.S. and Canada theaters) according to ComScore Inc. Last weekend the film set a March opening record, earning $174.8 million domestic. It has also managed a favorable rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the current rating at 70%.
Its debuting competitors all placed below it. Power Rangers, coming in second, earned $40.5 million in its opening weekend. Life, at fourth place, earned $12.6 million. Lastly CHiPs, opening to the seventh place slot, earned just $7.6 million. They had Rotten Tomatoes ratings of 45%, 65%, and 30% respectively.
