Beijing’s 2022 Winter Olympics song a knockoff of “Let It Go”?

Critics are claiming that “The Snow and Ice Dance”, the official song of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, has a striking number of similarities to “Let It Go” from the hit Disney film, Frozen. Many commenters are saying that they’re not surprised a song from China would “cross the line between inspiration and imitation fits with the country’s reputation for plagiarism and copyright infringement.”

The particular parts of the song being questioned are the opening piano lines, the 23-second mark and the 1:14 mark in the song.

The New York Times cited Caijing Online, the website of a prominent Chinese business magazine, who also mentioned the similarities between the songs and came up with these parallels: Both songs employ a piano as the major instrument, have similar prelude chords and an eight-beat introduction, and they run at almost exactly the same tempo.”
