Disney Is Building More Than Ever, So Why Is Imagineering Losing Jobs?

Walt Disney Imagineering is facing another round of layoffs, and the timing raises some uncomfortable questions about the future of Disney’s projects.

A new California Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing confirms 159 permanent layoffs at Disney’s Glendale, California campus, home to Walt Disney Imagineering. (California’s WARN Act requires qualifying employers to provide at least 60 days’ advance notice before certain mass layoffs, relocations, or business closures; giving affected employees time to prepare for job loss and seek other employment.)

The Los Angeles Times initially reported between 100 and 200 layoffs across Disney’s Experiences division. A source familiar with the decision attributed the cuts to regular evaluations of company priorities, investments, and project timelines. These cuts follow several rounds of Disney layoffs throughout 2026, including reductions in technology, human resources, and entertainment divisions.

What Does This Mean for Disney’s Upcoming Projects?

Disney has an enormous list of projects underway, including the Tropical Americas expansion at Animal Kingdom, Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios, Piston Peak, Villains Land and other updates at Magic Kingdom, and several projects at Disneyland Resort, including the Avatar expansion and attractions inspired by Coco and Avengers. Beyond the U.S. parks, there’s also Disneyland Abu Dhabi, new Disney Cruise Line ships like the Disney Believe, and other international projects in development. And that’s not even counting what Imagineering could be working on behind the scenes that Disney hasn’t announced yet.

Imagineering plays a major role in bringing these experiences to life, from early concepts and storytelling to engineering and construction. With so many major projects on the horizon, losing experienced creative talent raises some legitimate concerns about how Disney plans to manage it all.

Will Disney rely more heavily on outside contractors? Could smaller teams affect the quality of upcoming attractions or push back construction timelines? Could Disney quietly shelve projects that haven’t moved beyond early development?

Disney hasn’t announced any project cancellations connected to these layoffs. Still, it’s frustrating to hear of these massive cuts.

Disney continues announcing ambitious theme park expansions and reporting billions in revenue and strong profits, yet somehow keeps finding reasons to eliminate jobs from the very teams responsible for bringing these experiences to life. It’s hard to understand how a company with so much financial success continues cutting talented employees while promising guests bigger and better attractions. At what point do these decisions start affecting the quality and creativity we’ve come to expect from Disney?

Disney Experiences generated approximately $36.2 billion in revenue during fiscal 2025. With that kind of business, fans have every reason to expect Disney to invest in the talented people behind it all. For now, we can only hope these decisions won’t compromise the creativity and attention to detail that make Disney so special. What do you think of Disney’s latest Imagineering layoffs?
