The Walt Disney Company and the Michael Jackson Estate have reached a settlement over a lawsuit that stems from the 2018 ABC television special, The Last Days of Michael Jackson.
The Jackson Estate sued claiming copyright infringement as the special included portions of over 30 songs and videos that belong to the state. According to the lawsuit, producers never contacted the Estate for permission to use the material. Disney said that they used the clips under the “fair use” doctrine.
The notice of the confidential settlement was filed with the court on December 18, 2019.
Attorney for the Estate released a statement saying that “the dispute with Disney has been amicably resolved.”
Had a settlement not been reached, the lawsuit would have headed to trial in December 2020.
