Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports to add new venue

A 286,000-square-foot sports venue will be added to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World. Plans have been filed with the South Florida Water Management District, but it’s unclear exactly what kind of venue it will be.

The building’s actual physical footprint is planned to be 180,000 square feet. To compare, the Orlando Sentinel says the Jostens Center gymnasium at the Complex is 70,000 square feet. There will also be parking added to the 10-acre project.

Disney had to get permission from the state to develop the project on wetlands, “including an additional 122 acres in the area that encompasses the sports complex and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.”

ESPN Wide World of Sports hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including spring training for the Atlanta Braves.

Leah grew up in a little farming town in Illinois, right on the Mississippi River. Her Chicago-born husband, David, left the city for her, and they're now raising their three children (Jacob, Jonah and Lydia) just 12 miles from her hometown. As the Senior Editor of the DIS (wdwinfo.com), Leah spends a lot of time writing about, reading about, and discussing Disney. So, it should come as no surprise that one of her family's favorite ways to spend time is going to Walt Disney World and traveling on Disney Cruise Line. She also enjoys shopping, watching movies with her husband and doing crafts with and for her kids.
