The Disney Parks Blog posted recently that live music would be “expanding at Disneyland Park beginning July 17,” with more musical acts throughout the day and new arrangements and themed performances for the Disneyland Band.
What the official Disney site didn’t say is that, per union contract, current members of the band were recently given an “end of run” statement:
The Disneyland Band current creative offering and configuration is approaching the end of its run.
The last day of performance will be July 16th, 2015. As required by our Collective Bargaining Agreement, this memorandum shall serve as notice to each member of the cast.
On behalf of the Disneyland Resort we thank you for your many fine performances, your continued support and professionalism.
Band members must now re-audition for the new incarnation of the band, or be placed in smaller, breakout groups.
Bob Sanders, President of Orange County’s Musicians’ Association, is quoted as saying, “It is simply wrong to ask these seasoned professionals–so beloved by park visitors–to audition for the band they are already in.”
According to Sanders, some members have been part of the band for up to 40 years.
