Finding Dory tops $1 billion mark at global box office

Finding Dory has topped $1 billion at the global box office. This record makes it the third Disney-Pixar film to hit one billion dollars in just this year alone. The other two films to meet this mark are Captain America: Civil War and Zootopia.

Finding Dory is also the top-grossing release at domestic theaters this year, bringing in $484 million. It is believed that the film could still have another $20-$20 million in foreign sales, so by the end of the year, it could pass up Zootopia for the number 2 spot. If this happens, it will also solidify its position as #21 on the all-time box office list, passing up the original Jurassic Park. Finding Dory would then be the fourth-highest grossing animated film ever. The top three spots currently belong to Frozen, Toy Story 3, and Minions.

Forbes predicts that Disney may have a couple more record-breaking movies still to come this year – Star Wars: Rogue One and Moana. They believe that the only other upcoming release capable of similar numbers is Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them by Warner Bros. The Forbes article says that if numbers stay on the track they’re currently on, “Disney will have six of the top-ten grossing films of the year, and probably hold on to the top 5 spots on that list, maybe even the top 6, which would be an unprecedented feat if they pull it off.”
