Pixar has already announced that Cars 3 will be released June 16, 2017, but we don’t know too much about the plot yet.
The original Cars film was a hit for the company and has become one of the most beloved franchises Pixar has created. However, its follow-up film, Cars 2, is not nearly as well respected. Though it did well financially, the storyline fell short with many fans.
Entertainment Weekly spoke to director John Lasseter about the upcoming Cars 3 storyline and here’s what he had to say:
“Lightning McQueen, he’s awesome. We’ve got some great new characters, some great racing in it. It’s a very emotional story. It’s a little bit more akin to Cars 1, where you get into a deep emotion with him. It’s a really special story. It’s very emotional and his relationship with Doc Hudson, and his memory of Doc Hudson.”
The character Doc Hudson was voiced by Paul Newman, who passed away in 2008. He was not replaced in Cars 2, so it will be interesting to see who Pixar chooses to follow up the legendary actor.
