Walt Disney World will be using drones in a new nighttime show at Disney Springs.
Just this week, the Federal Aviation Administration approved Disney’s application to use drones in their theme parks, something Disney has been attempting to get passed since last year.
Earlier today, the Disney Parks Blog revealed the first look at the new show, with a quick peek at a Christmas tree made of green lights in the night sky. No opening date was announced.
The waiver for the drone use is good through November 2020. In the application, Disney said they would be 100 feet away from guest areas and “the flight paths will largely take place over water elements and restricted areas.” They will go as high as 150 feet above the ground.
Scott Smith, assistant professor of hospitality and tourism at the University of South Carolina, said that he thinks it’s a good idea to start the drones out at Disney Springs instead of the theme parks. He believes it will help bring people to Disney Springs, but that once the technology is worked out, the drones will be utilized in the parks.
