Disney learned a lot about the theme park market in China during Shanghai Disney Resort’s first year, and one of those things turned out to be quite surprising. Shanghai loves turkey legs. They really do.
“We were there a few weeks ago for the anniversary and we sold 4,500 in one day. We couldn’t buy enough of them,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said, describing the food’s popularity overseas.
Shanghai’s immense love for the legs surprised Iger, who did not expect the food to reach such a high demand. On Wednesday, Iger told reporters, “If you go to Disneyland or Disney World, we sell gigantic turkey legs — they’re like the size of my arm… And when I heard we were putting them on the menu in Shanghai I thought our group was crazy. Why are we selling turkey legs in China?”
Shanghai Disney has been selling more than 4,000 legs a day, which is a significant demand to keep up with. Disney’s Polish supplier couldn’t provide that much turkey by themselves, so Disney purchasers had to scout South American sources.
It is an important lesson to remember: regardless of who we are or where we come from, we can all agree on the simple pleasures of eating an over-sized bird leg right before we hop on some rides.
