Smoke Causes Brief Closure of PeopleMover and Astro Orbiter at Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom Cast Members evacuated both the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover and the Astro Orbiter for a brief time Thursday afternoon after smoke was seen coming from the area of the PeopleMover.

The Orlando Sentinel talked with James Reinert, a guest who was in line at the time of the incident:

“I could smell something electrical/rubber burning for several minutes. Cast member then stopped the queue from entering the line.”

Reinert added that Cast Members used a fire extinguisher on the PeopleMover’s exit ramp.

According to Eryka Washington, spokesperson for the Reedy Creek Improvement District, firefighters responded to the attraction at 5:24pm, but found no fire. They left the scene 12 minutes later.

Both Tomorrowland attractions were back in operation in less than two hours and no other attractions were affected.

Walt Disney World representatives did not respond to the Sentinel when asked for comment.
