Later this month, the new Island Tower addition will open at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows, and Disney has shared new details about the sustainable décor and design that will embody it. For as long as I can remember, Disney has been dedicated to making measurable progress toward a healthier planet for future generations as it continues to grow and operate its business.

The tower was largely pre-built off-site to reduce waste and is designed to use 30% less energy than similar resorts, featuring efficient heating and cooling systems, lighting, and an all-electric kitchen. As a result, the tower will join Disney’s Polynesian Villas in the Florida Green Lodging program, recognizing efforts to conserve and protect Florida’s natural resources.

Sustainability abounds in the tower, where even the guest room rugs are crafted from recycled plastic using advanced technology. Inspired by Polynesian beaches, the rugs feature coral patterns and ocean hues.

Preserved moss was used to make the one-of-a-kind art installation that guests will see hanging in the Tower’s lobby. The new tower will also feature tapa, a traditional Polynesian cloth made from natural fibers. The custom piece celebrates Polynesian culture with ocean-inspired designs.

We’ve previously seen the image below of the dining room inside the new Wailulu Bar & Grill, but Disney shared that the fish sculptures hanging from the ceiling were sustainably crafted using reclaimed fishing nets. Pretty cool, huh?

One last tidbit we want to share is about the relocation of a historic tree that dates back to the opening of the Walt Disney World Resort. The Florida Strangler Fig and the Sabal palm growing within it, beloved by guests at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, has been relocated for continued enjoyment. What a gorgeous tree! If you’ve never seen it before, be sure to stop by during your next visit.
