Walt Disney World Increases Spending on Law Enforcement

According to Click Orlando/News 6, the law enforcement presence on Walt Disney World property has been increased. The Reedy Creek Improvement District has increased the spending on outside law enforcement patrolling Disney property to $15.8 million dollars, from $13.7 million in June of 2016. This budgeted increase went into effect “in the fiscal year that began October 1.” Reedy Creek pays the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to patrol the entire property’s roadways, to help with the safety and security of the theme parks, and much more. With this increase in spending, it is very likely that guests will be more aware of the law enforcement during their vacation.

Walt Disney World’s Vice President of Communications Jacquee Wahler said of the budgeted increase,

“We have a comprehensive approach to security that includes measures that are visible and some that are not. We continuously review and adapt security procedures in coordination with law enforcement officials, but do not discuss specifics in order to avoid compromising their effectiveness.”

As terrorism hit close to home in Orlando with the June 2016 terrorist attack at Pulse nightclub, the increase for law enforcement presence unfortunately seems necessary. Supposedly, the gunman Omar Mateen even considered Downtown Disney (now Disney Springs) as his target instead of Pulse nightclub.
