I recently experienced Tusker House Restaurant for the very first time, and somehow, after all these years visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom… I feel like I uncovered a secret.
Tucked away in Harambe, Tusker House is an all-you-care-to-enjoy character buffet serving a mix of African-inspired dishes and familiar American favorites. And while character dining at Walt Disney World can sometimes feel like a race between eating, taking photos and making sure you don’t accidentally miss Mickey while getting another plate, my experience here was surprisingly relaxed. And the food is actually really good!
Finding Tusker House in Harambe
Tusker House is located in the Africa section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, just off the pathway leading toward Kilimanjaro Safaris. Look for the restaurant’s sign near the Dawa bar and follow the pathway back to the check-in area.
Guests can check in through My Disney Experience or at the host stand. Once our table was ready, we headed farther down the pathway and into the restaurant.
Tusker House is much larger inside than you might expect. There are five dining rooms, with the buffet located in the main room. The different rooms help break up the restaurant so it doesn’t feel like one enormous character dining hall.
It’s also a very welcome escape from Animal Kingdom itself. This park can get very humid, and sitting inside an air-conditioned restaurant for a leisurely meal in the middle of the day felt especially wonderful.
Donald’s Dining Safari
The classics are here! Donald Duck hosts his own “Dining Safari,” joined by Mickey Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Goofy, all dressed for an adventure in their adorable safari outfits.
Our character interactions were fantastic, and I appreciated that they didn’t feel rushed. There was time for photos and some silliness at the table without the experience feeling overly chaotic. For the duration we were sitting for our meal, the characters stopped in our dinig room 2 or 3 times; even if they had already had an extended interaction with us before, they still stopped and briefly greeted again!
I also loved how much there is to look at inside Tusker House. The theming has layers of little details that make the restaurant feel like a genuine Harambe outpost.
Come Hungry
Lunch and dinner feature a buffet combining African-inspired flavors with plenty of approachable options for less adventurous eaters.
The breads and dips are a great place to start, with naan accompanied by curries, hummus, and tepanade. The salad selection includes lentil and couscous salads, along with my personal favorite, the watermelon-feta salad!
Hot selections include spit-roasted tandoori chicken, berbere-marinated pork, grilled salmon with chimichurri sauce, green curry shrimp, Doro Wat and braised beef tajine. Plant-based choices include North African pilau, South African-spiced cauliflower and potato and pea curry.
Don’t ignore the kids’ section: alongside chicken strips, meatballs, broccoli, corn and potatoes is macaroni and cheese that was genuinely some of the best mac and cheese I’ve had at Walt Disney World.
There is no shame in being an adult walking back to the table with a helping of kids’ buffet mac and cheese. Consider this permission.
Save room for dessert! The buffet includes a rotating selection of Savannah-inspired sweets such as cheesecakes, bread pudding, blondies, mousses and verrines.
How Much Does Tusker House Cost?
Tusker House serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Breakfast is currently $49 per adult and $33 per child ages 3-9, while lunch and dinner are $64 per adult and $42 per child ages 3-9, plus tax and gratuity.
For those using the 2026 Disney Dining Plan, unlike several character dining experiences that require two table-service meals, Tusker House requires one table-service meal per person!
Is Tusker House Worth It?
At $64 per adult for lunch or dinner, Tusker House certainly isn’t an inexpensive lunch break. But when you consider that you’re getting an all-you-care-to-enjoy meal with genuinely good food and individual interactions with several classic Disney characters, I see the appeal.
Tusker House gave us a substantial break from the heat and crowds without requiring us to leave Animal Kingdom, the characters were wonderful, and the buffet had enough variety and quality fare that I actually wanted to go back for another plate.
After years of walking right past that little Elephant sign on my way to Kilimanjaro Safaris, Tusker House has officially earned a spot on my favorite Animal Kingdom dining list. (It just took me way too long to figure it out!)
