New Bluey Treat in Walt Disney World: Is It Authentic?

Hey friends! There’s a new array of treats heading into the Disney Parks that are supposedly inspired by Bluey, the Australian animated series that Disney holds the streaming rights to outside of Australia, China, and New Zealand. By now, the lovable family of Australian Cattle Dogs has become a full-blown global phenomenon, with families everywhere falling in love with Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, and Chilli and their everyday adventures.

And honestly? Most of the new snacks look cute. But one particular offering has this Australian raising an eyebrow. Over at Pizzafari in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney has announced the new Fairy Bread Cake arriving May 26th. The official description reads: Vanilla birthday cake dipped in white chocolate and rainbow sprinkles with raspberry dipping sauce.

Now listen. I understand the challenge here. Selling actual fairy bread in a Disney park would basically mean charging guests theme park prices for white bread, margarine, and sprinkles. That’s a hard sell, even for Disney. But if you are going to take inspiration from what is essentially an iconic Australian childhood staple, shouldn’t it at least resemble the real thing?

For my fellow non-Aussies, fairy bread is ridiculously simple. In fact, that’s the whole point. It’s cheap white bread, spread with butter or margarine, then absolutely smothered in sprinkles. Not gently decorated. Not artistically dusted. We are talking about a full commitment to sprinkles here.

And yes, the sprinkle choice matters. Friendships have probably ended over the great 100s-and-1000s debate. Some people insist on the classic tiny round sprinkles. Others prefer the longer, sweeter strands (correct choice, btw). Chocolate sprinkles? That’s controversial territory. Some will allow it. Others will absolutely not. But cake? Raspberry dipping sauce? This is where Disney has lost the plot a little bit.

Also, the sprinkle coverage on this thing is weak. Fairy bread is not meant to have a tasteful scattering of sprinkles. You pour the sprinkles onto a plate in a thick layer and press the buttered bread face-down into them until every square centimeter (yep, metric system) is coated. It should look chaotic. It should leave sprinkles everywhere. Half of them should end up on the floor by the end of the party. That’s the authentic experience.

So, if you want the real Australian fairy bread experience at home, here’s the recipe: get the cheapest white bread you can find, butter or preferably margarine, and a generous amount of sprinkles. Spread the butter thick enough for the sprinkles to stick, press the bread face-down into the sprinkle pile to form a solid layer, and cut it diagonally into triangle quarters.

That’s it. No dipping sauce required.
