5 Mistakes Guests With Table Service Reservations Make

Hey, Disney Parks friends. There is something about booking a Table-Service meal at Disney that makes it feel like an event before you’ve even left home. You’ve picked the restaurant, checked the menu, found the perfect time, and probably spent a good few months imagining exactly what you’re going to order. And I completely understand why! Some of these meals become some of our favorite vacation memories.

But here’s the thing. We can get a little carried away with the planning. When you’re trying to fit rides, shows, snacks, Lightning Lanes, character meets, and that all-important dinner reservation into one day, it doesn’t take much for the whole schedule to feel like a Disney version of a military operation. So today, I wanted to look at five of the most common Table-Service mistakes I see guests make, including a few I’ve probably made myself, and some very simple ways to make those dining experiences feel a whole lot more enjoyable.

1. Booking for Midday

Making your Table Service reservation for 12 PM on the dot can be a bit of a no-no. Not only will you be heading to your lunch spot, but so will half the park. Even with a reservation, those congested midday periods can mean navigating heavier crowds to get there and potentially waiting longer for your food when the restaurant is at its busiest.

If you can, try booking closer to 11 AM or after 1 PM for a slightly smoother experience. You may find that moving your meal just an hour or so makes a surprising difference to the rest of your day.

2. Overlapping Lightning Lane Times

If you’ve left yourself a very tight window for lunch at a Table Service restaurant with a Lightning Lane entry time sitting right in the middle of it, you might want to make a few adjustments.

There is nothing more stressful than watching that window tick away on the clock while everyone is trying to finish the meal you’ve been dreaming about for six months. Leave yourself a little breathing room between reservations and planned experiences. I promise that extra time won’t be wasted. You’ll either be very glad you have it, or you’ll find something fun to fill the gap.

3. Overeating Snacks

Now, this one I understand completely. When I have a Table Service reservation for dinner, it can be so hard to convince everyone to stop indulging in those seasonal treats and snacks, so we’re actually hungry when dinner rolls around. How on earth are you supposed to walk past 100 cookies at Harbour Galley, even if your dinner reservation is only 20 minutes away?

Make an effort to spread those snack stops throughout the day, especially when you have a bigger meal planned. You want to enjoy the Table Service experience and try a little bit of everything without feeling completely full before you’ve even made it through the appetizer.

4. Thinking You Will be Seated at Your Reservation Time

In the real world, if you have a reservation at a particular time, you can generally expect to arrive and be seated fairly quickly. At least, that’s often the experience here in Australia. While I do see more waiting across the USA, it’s nothing compared with the extended wait you can sometimes encounter at Disney if your table hasn’t been vacated yet or the restaurant is running behind.

I’ve seen guests wait 30 to 45 minutes beyond their reservation time, and that can be enough to throw the rest of your carefully planned day completely off track.

Remember that buffer I mentioned earlier? It applies here too. Give yourself some breathing room around your dining reservation wherever you can. Your entire day doesn’t need to run on a stopwatch.

5. Rushing the Experience

When you’re at home planning your vacation, you’ve probably convinced yourself that this is exactly where it’s worth spending an hour and a half of your day. Whether it’s character dining or somewhere completely different, something about that restaurant had you at hello. But once you’re actually there, everything in you can start screaming that you need to get back out into the madness so you don’t miss anything.

I see so many families rush through their meals that sometimes I’m not even sure why they came in the first place. Don’t miss those moments sitting around the table, catching up, looking through the photos you’ve taken and talking about what you’re going to do next.

Sometimes your Table Service reservation isn’t just a meal. It’s a chance to stop. It’s a chance to rest your feet, reconnect with the people you’re traveling with, and enjoy a quieter moment among all the hustle and bustle outside. Remember why you booked it in the first place and enjoy the experience in full, as best you can.
