Disney Dining Guide: San Angel Inn Restaurante

Disney World has no shortage of great restaurants. Epcot’s World Showcase alone hosts over 30 different dining options. With so many choices, sometimes the hardest thing about your trip to Epcot can be deciding where to eat. Let's look at one of the first options you come to when entering the World Showcase from the Mexican side. This is The San Angel Inn Restaurante in the Mexico Pavilion. 3 The Atmosphere: This is arguably one of the best themed restaurants in the park. Even though the dining area always seems a bit dark, the feeling that you are sitting in an outdoor café, under the stars, on the Mexican riverside, beneath the glow of an Aztec temple and an erupting volcano completely overwhelms your senses. While Disney itself is an escape from the real world, the Mexican pavilion is an escape from the hot and crowded reality of your park day. An hour inside will have you forgetting that the bright Florida sun is still beating down outside. The dining area can feel cramped at times as they are trying to fit as many tables as possible into a limited amount of space. To help with this, we typically request a table by the river and have never had an issue getting one. This also helps to entertain the kids who are distracted by the temple, the volcano, and the endless stream of boats passing by from the Gran Fiesta Tour ride. Overall, the atmosphere is an amazing immersive experience that is well aimed to please a couple seeking a romantic meal under the stars or a family looking to escape the heat of the day. 4 The Food: San Angel offers a variety of traditional Mexican food. The options range from familiar dishes like the classic Chile Relleno, Steak Tacos, and Chicken Enchiladas to more adventurous choices like the Lomo de Puerco en Pipián. At first glance, the menu appears overwhelming with dish names like “Arrachera con Chilaquiles” and “Pescado a la Veracruzana.”  Reading the descriptions, however, you quickly discover that these big names are really just the New York Strip and Catch of the Day. So if you are not a culinary adventurer, give the menu a thorough examination and you will easily find something to your liking. Even if you are not a fan of Mexican cuisine, you can find perfectly enjoyable dishes like the “Pollo a las Rajas” (Grilled Chicken) or the “Peto en salsa Poblana” (Grilled Fish and Roasted Potatoes). One of our favorite items on the menu is the “Tostadas de Tinga.” This tostada-style appetizer features pulled chicken, black refried beans, green tomatillo sauce, queso fresco, and sour cream. It is excellent! 2 The Value: San Angel is a mid-level table service with prices in the $15 to $30 range. While the majority of the entrees are $20 to $30, it is still far less than the most expensive option in the World Showcase. For those on the Disney Dining Plan, the “Traditional Prix-Fixe Mexican Faire” is a great deal. Where the standard table service plan will get you an entrée and a dessert, the Traditional Prix-Fixe option includes a soup or appetizer as well. The Prix-Fixe meals vary between lunch and dinner, so check the menu and plan accordingly. For lunch, you are served the “Enchiladas Verdes con Pollo” (Chicken Enchiladas) and the “Sopa Azteca,” which is an excellent traditional tortilla soup. The dinner option includes our favorite “Tostadas de Tinga” appetizer and “Tacos de Pescado” (Fish Tacos with chipotle-lime aioli). Very good! Both meals also include a Creamy Bavarian mousse for dessert. These Prix-Fixe meals are plenty of food and a really good deal with or without the dining plan. Overall: Overall, this is one of our favorite places to eat at Disney. Like any place, it is not without its flaws, but in the end our entire family enjoys the food and the atmosphere. Checking Trip Advisor for additional reviews and feedback is a great idea.  There are the typical posts from guests who had a bad experience or didn’t enjoy their food, but with over 800 reviews and nearly 700 of those being “Very Good” or “Excellent” ratings, The San Angel Inn Restaurante is definitely worth checking out.
