Celebrating Hispanic Heritage With Jaleo in Disney Springs

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage With Jaleo in Disney Springs Hispanic Heriatage Month Jaleo Header

From September 15th – October 15th, Disney will be taking part in the celebration of Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month. You might have seen some of the exciting changes that we will see during that time, such as Encanto wraps for the Skyliner, new character experiences, and more throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. However, we wanted to take a moment to recognize some familiar faces from Disney Springs who share their Hispanic heritage with Disney guests on a daily basis.

Jaleo, by José Andrés, is a popular restaurant in the Disney Springs area that brings an authentic taste of Spain to your Walt Disney World dining table, and two of the people who help make that magic happen are Chef Beyla Garcia, Jaleo Sous Chef, and Mario Bernal, Jaleo’s General Manager.

Chef Beyla Garcia, Jaleo Sous Chef

Chef Garcia is originally from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, and spends her days assisting Jaleo’s Head Chef to bring the flavors of this restaurant to life. Having learned how to cook at her parent’s cooking school in Venezuela, Chef Garcia now trains her fellow chefs in the art of authentic Spanish dishes. Using her knowledge of this cultural cooking style and fresh ingredients that are true to the regions where the recipes originate, Chef Garcia helps to bring a little piece of the Hispanic culture to guests of Walt Disney World.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you, and why do you think it’s important to celebrate it?

Hispanic Heritage Month means so much to me because it makes me feel closer to my home country, Venezuela. I’m not there, but when everyone around me celebrates Hispanic culture and traditions, it almost feels like I am. Hispanic people are a minority in the United States, so when others get to learn more about us and  hear our voices, it’s a beautiful thing. I think it’s so important for people to learn more about differing cultures and traditions.

Mario Bernal, Jaleo General Manager

Mario Bernal, a Colombian native, began his profession as a side job, earning money to make his way through college. Starting as a polisher/cleaner, Bernal spent years learning every position in the restaurant until it became clear that his extensive experience in the hospitality industry was able to provide him with a career path beyond a part-time job through school. The Jaleo General Manager now spends his days managing and overseeing daily business activities and operations.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you, and why do you think it’s important to celebrate it?

It means there is a recognition of the positive influence our culture has brought to this society. It’s important to be able to celebrate and recognize where we come from and to be positive role models for our future generations.
