Hey Disney Springs friends! As you know, I love seeing new experiences pop up around Disney Springs that give us another reason to step away from the usual Disney routine, and this one certainly caught my attention. On September 21st, Morimoto Asia hosted its very first Sushi Showdown, bringing together five talented local chefs for a sold-out evening of sushi, friendly competition, and plenty of deliciousness. Guests got to taste their way through the creations before casting their vote for the fan favorite, while an expert panel judged each dish on taste, freshness, and overall cohesiveness.
And we have our winners! The Fan Favorite title went to Chef Chau Trinh of Sushi Pop Oviedo, selected by guests using a rather fun gold-coin voting system. Meanwhile, the Judge’s Choice was awarded to Chef Kevin Abanilla of Okonomi. So, congratulations to both chefs for taking home Orlando’s first Sushi Showdown honors! I always enjoy seeing Disney Springs embrace experiences that bring together local talent and the wider Orlando community, and this feels like such a fun addition to the dining calendar.
But as much as I love a little culinary competition, the part of this evening that really makes me smile is what happened beyond the plates. The sold-out event raised more than $11,000 for Give Kids The World through its live auction, with the proceeds supporting cost-free wish vacations for critically ill children and their families. That turns an evening of great food into something with a much bigger purpose, and I can’t think of a better reason to raise a glass, or perhaps a pair of chopsticks, to everyone involved. As Disney fans, we have so much to be grateful for, and knowing you’ve helped families going through a hard time share a little of that magic is worth the investment.
We officially have our first sushi champions, and Morimoto Asia has given us another reason to keep an eye on what’s happening around Disney Springs. Between the local chefs, the competition, the sold-out crowd, and an incredible cause benefiting from the evening, this feels like exactly the sort of experience that can make a Disney Springs night out feel a little different, from locals to park guests. I’m already hopeful to see new dates for Sushi Showdown to return, so that I can hopefully be in town when it happens and be a part of the magic.
