Keep, Update, Or Demolish: Disney’s Hollywood Studios Edition

In Keep, Update, Or Demolish, I have selected and reviewed attractions that I’ve heard a lot of critical reviews of. I combine my personal opinion with the general consensus of these attraction and determine the fate of certain Disney Parks attractions – whether Disney should keep it, update it, or demolish it.

Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage – Demolish

Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage is a fun show, but it doesn’t seem up to the Disney standard. After viewing Disneyland’s Mickey and the Magical Map show, it is apparent how cheap and outdated Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage is. This theatre would be the perfect place for Disney’s Hollywood Studios to steal Disneyland’s Mickey and the Magical Map show. Typically, when one of the domestic Disney Parks steals something directly from the other park it is viewed as a lack of creativity, but the addition of Mickey and the Magical Map would be the perfect addition to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Great Movie – Update

Before Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios) was built, Imagineers proposed The Great Movie Ride as a pavilion in Epcot’s Future World. Michael Eisner and Disney executives liked the idea so much that they wanted an entirely new theme park surrounding this attraction. So without The Great Movie Ride, there may have never been Disney’s Hollywood Studios. That’s why this attraction is so important to this park. With that said, this attraction needs a facelift. This attraction needs to do a better job blending the old with the new. Of course keeping some of the classic scene from films like Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, and Wizard of Oz is important, but there also needs to be some addition of new scenes from films released in the last 10 years. This attraction is becoming less and less relevant. Children, and even some young parents, weren’t born for any of the films shown in the current attraction hopefully that’ll change. There is some hope that the new sponsor, Turner Classic Movies, could help rejuvenate this attraction to its former glory, but nothing official has stated they would do so.

Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! – Keep

The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! was epic in the 1990s, but this show isn’t what it used to be. With that said, because Disney’s Hollywood Studios is undergoing so much construction currently I don’t think this show will be demolished anytime soon. With the ability to seat 2,150 guests per show, this attraction shouldn’t be demolished in a park that desperately needs more attractions. Unless it is necessary for the construction of Star Wars Land taking out this show would a horrible idea. As much as I would like to put this on the demolish category, it is an attraction that this park needs right now in order to manage the crowds.

Muppet Vision 3D_05

Muppet*Vision 3D – Update

Who doesn’t love the Muppets? Their silliness, jokes, and over-the-top gags are ridiculous, but also lovable. This lovable humor has been a staple of the Muppets since before the Muppet Show aired in 1976. The problem with Muppet*Vision 3D is the added character Waldo C. Graphic, which is “the world’s first computer-generated Muppet.” This Waldo character lacks the lovable-ness of the actual Muppets making his character pointless and annoying. If this show was updated without Waldo, I think this show would be extremely popular. Bringing in Jason Segel and Amy Adams from the 2011 hit film The Muppets would be the perfect way to get guests excited about this show.

Voyage of the Little Mermaid – Demolish

Voyage of the Little Mermaid is extremely outdated. It was almost put in the update category, but since the addition of Under The Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid in the Magic Kingdom, there isn’t much appeal of this show anymore. Unlike Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! this show doesn’t seat a large amount of guests, and wouldn’t significantly worsen the crowds . If they temporarily took this show down, and replaced it with a show themed around a Disney movie not often seen in the Disney Parks, I think it would be enormously popular.

Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream – Keep

Appreciating the legacy of Walt Disney is a crucial part of vacationing in Walt Disney World. Walking through the miniature museum, and watching the film that overview the trials and tribulations of Walt Disney’s life give guests a better appreciation for the parks. There is so much history to be learned by walking into this attraction that it is a must do for any guest of the park.
