The parents of a Missouri family were killed this week in a crash on Interstate 4 while headed to the beach.
Greg and Sarah Moyers, of Leadwood, Missouri, had taken their two girls on vacation to Walt Disney World and Universal Studios and were headed to the beach around 12:30pm on Sunday, September 25.
A Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson said, “A Ford Focus drifted into their lane near DeLand, causing their Nissan to veer off the road and hit a tree about 12:30 p.m.” The parents were pronounced dead at the scene and Haley, 13, and Sophia, 8, were transferred with serious injuries to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women.
As of Monday evening, September 26, Haley was noted as being in critical condition and Sophia is stable.
Charles King, 43, of New London, NC, was the driver of the Ford Focus; he was not injured in the accident.
Family and friends say the couple had saved for months to take the girls on vacation.
The Moyers were raising five kids together; two of them were Sarah’s sister’s children.
Loni Burnside Eaton, a close friend of the family, said, “Their kids were their world. They were very involved and supportive parents and just wanted the best for them. They wanted the girls to experience Disney and the beach. I can’t believe this really happened.”
Sarah was a McDonald’s manager and Greg owned a muffler shop. When he posted on his shop’s Facebook page announced that he would be gone for about a week, one customer wrote, “Ok. I hope this is for vacation. You guys need it.” Moyers responded, “Just for a short vacation.”
The community is rallying to help the family, who were well known and liked in their small town. Relatives have traveled to Orlando to be with the girls. Fundraisers have been set up for the family, including a Go Fund Me page.
