SeaWorld’s Kraken to become virtual reality roller coaster

SeaWorld Orlando has announced several updates planned for the park over the next year. The biggest news was about an upgrade to the Kraken roller coaster, which will become a virtual-reality coaster by summer 2017. Riders will have the option to wear headsets that cover their ears and eyes, “taking riders on a mission alongside sea creatures inspired by extinct and legendary animals of the past.”

It’s not yet known if the images will be 3D, but music is being composed just for this ride. Brian Morrow, SeaWorld Entertainment’s vice president of theme park experience design said, “We’re developing sort of our own technology on how we’re going to pull this off. It’s nothing that you’ve seen from other parks.”

Six Flags has added virtual reality experiences to some of their existing roller coasters and Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights debuted a new virtual reality attraction this year. This is a cheaper option for parks to update an existing attraction without building a whole new ride.

We want to make sure we’re appealing to a very wide audience and a very, very competitive market. I’m not going to hide from the fact that yes, it’s capital efficient, but that wasn’t the driver.”

Other changes planned for the marine park include:

  • A renovation of Dolphin Nursery, including the addition of acrylic windows, allowing guests to see the dolphins swimming underwater. • The Seven Seas Festival will come to Orlando (this food and music festival is already in place in San Diego and San Antonio). There are already two other similar events (Bands, Brew & BBQ and Viva La Musica), so with the addition of the Seven Seas Festival, there will be 15 weekends offering these type of events. More space will be added for these festivals as well. The Flamecraft Bar will open next to SeaFire Grill in May, offering 16 seasonal craft beers and outdoor seating.
  • Electric Ocean, a new nighttime show, will open at Bayside Theater in the summer of 2017. بيتواي “It will include bioluminescent lighting, music, fountains, live performances and a fireworks finale.”
  • The Nautilus Theater will host a new show Memorial Day through Labor Day.
  • Aquatica will have a new passholder lounge open by Easter. “Perks include concierge service, complimentary sunscreen, a private entrance to Banana Beach and private animal encounters.”

Altogether, the SeaWorld parks across the country will have $175 million worth of additions and updates done in the next year. Donnie Mills, SeaWorld Orlando Park President said, “We’re really excited about this rolling out, if you will, all of these new experiences and having the opportunity to do it within one year.”
