Prepping for Disney? The Deal-Breaking Step You’re Forgetting

Preparing your family for a Disney vacation has many moving parts. Not only do you need to have all of your bookings and registrations in order, budget and finances under control, and expectations in check, but you also need to get everyone ready for the physical side of your vacation. Even though you might picture a relaxing holiday strolling down Main Street, enjoying table service meals and, somehow, lucking out to be one of only a few groups that manage to score a seated position on a rare bench for fireworks, the reality can be very different.

The parks are enormous, and if the ground you need to cover wasn’t enough to concern you, it might not be obvious that to make the most out of your day, you will spend a lot of time traversing from one side to the other. Lightning Lanes and reservations lead the way as you scramble to cram as much action into your day as possible, each check mark adding a few thousand steps to your total. Before you know it, you are close to 30,000 steps and feeling pain in muscles you never knew you had.

And here’s the real kicker: it’s not just walking that’ll get you. What truly wears guests down, especially those not used to long theme park days, is the standing. Hours of stagnant, motionless waiting in queues, often without shade or a place to lean, will drain your energy faster than any high-speed coaster. From character meets to food pickups to rope drop crowd clusters, your body isn’t just in motion all day; it’s often stuck in one position, with no relief. That’s a recipe for sore backs, stiff legs, and feet that will revolt by day two.

To prepare, start gradually increasing your daily steps well before your trip, and more importantly, practice standing still for extended periods of time. Sounds ridiculous, but trust us, it makes a difference. Work on your posture; this will allow you to experience less muscle fatigue from standing in a hunched position. Break in your shoes thoroughly (yes, those cute Disney-themed sneakers count only if they’ve been battle-tested), and don’t overlook foot support like compression socks or insoles. Building stamina for both movement and immobility will help your family last longer, hurt less, and maybe even prevent that meltdown outside Soarin’ when you are only halfway through the day.
