Cinderella Castle’s Repainting Project Starts in January at Magic Kingdom

You can spend a few days at Walt Disney World, but it doesn’t really feel like you’ve arrived until you walk down Main Street and look up at Cinderella Castle for the first time that trip. Few things are more iconic than that. That’s why any visible change to the centerpiece of Magic Kingdom tends to get people talking. This time, though, the news comes with a silver lining for those who have missed the castle’s more classic look.

Beginning in January 2026, Disney will start repainting Cinderella Castle as part of a restoration project to bring back a more traditional color palette. The work is expected to continue well into the year, with completion planned for later in 2026. Disney first announced the project during Destination D23 in August 2025 where updated paint colors were shown, intended to enhance the castle’s architectural details.

The refreshed look will feature grays, creams, blues, and subtle gold accents, moving away from the rose gold and cobalt blue which debuted for the resort’s 50th anniversary.

The first step in the process will be the draining of the moat surrounding Cinderella Castle. This allows crews to safely access lower portions of the structure and properly prep surfaces for painting. From there, cranes will be brought in to reach higher sections of the castle. However, Disney has confirmed that these cranes will be lowered or removed from view by noon each day to limit how much they interfere with daytime sightlines and guest photos.

Also starting January 28th, certain entertainment offerings will be adjusted while work is underway:

  • The Let the Magic Begin welcome show will run in a modified format during the repainting project.
  • Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire and Happily Ever After will continue as scheduled, with minor adjustments.

No end date has been announced for these entertainment adjustments, but they are expected to remain in place while exterior work continues.

A Few More Thoughts

Disney is clearly moving faster than many expected and taking extra steps to manage the visual impact of the project. That alone feels like a win, especially when the end result is a return to a more timeless castle look. Which castle do you prefer?

I know I sound like a broken record here, but it’s hard not to ask the obvious question: where are the Castle Dream Lights? If Disney can manage crane placement carefully enough to preserve guest photos during a repainting project, it’s tough not to wonder what’s really stopping the return of those beloved holiday lights. It feels like the real hurdle now comes down to priorities and budget. One can hope that seeing Disney handle this paint project so thoughtfully might someday open the door for their return…
