If you fly through Orlando often, things are about to look pretty different.
Orlando International Airport (MCO) has shared early plans for its next expansion phase, and the main terminal is in line for a noticeable overhaul. The focus is on opening things up and making the space feel brighter. Expect polished floors, lighter colors, and design touches that lean more coastal than the current look.
This isn’t just about the airport’s appearance. The airport is trying to fix some of the biggest pain points travelers deal with now. Congestion is at the top of that list. Plans call for larger parking areas, more self-service bag drop stations, and updated flight displays that are easier to follow in real time. There’s also talk of biometric screening, which could cut down the time spent in security lines.

Some familiar features won’t survive the update. The retro lighting and seating that have been part of MCO for years are on the way out. In their place, the airport is going for something cleaner and more modern.

And yes, the carpet.
It’s one of those small details people actually notice, especially if you travel through Orlando a lot. The plan removes it from the main atrium, so that first impression will change. But it’s not gone for good. The carpet will stay in gate areas, which keeps at least a piece of that familiar MCO feel.

For years, many a traveler has taken photos of their feet with the carpet in the background and shared it on social media. I know I have. Perhaps a flooring company could design floor tiles with a similar design and color palette? Or not…
MCO seems to be aiming for a smoother, faster experience, even if it means letting go of a few things people have gotten used to.
