Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent is a new attraction coming to Tropical Americas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The adventure will feature an original storyline created specifically for Walt Disney World, taking guests beneath an ancient Maya temple and into a supernatural world filled with creatures, danger, and plenty of things Indiana Jones would probably rather not encounter.
The attraction will also feature new Audio-Animatronics, including an Indiana Jones figure modeled after Harrison Ford. This will mark the first time Ford’s likeness has been used for an Indiana Jones Audio-Animatronics figure at a Disney theme park.
The Maya Inspiration Behind the Attraction
Walt Disney Imagineering is blending the adventure of Indiana Jones with themes that connect the attraction specifically to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Guests will enter an ancient Maya temple and discover a story rooted in the relationship between Maya culture and the natural world. Imagineers are working with archaeologists, anthropologists, and Maya experts as they develop the attraction, with original Maya-inspired artwork and architectural details incorporated throughout the experience.
That connection to nature also helps distinguish Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent from other Indiana Jones attractions at Disney theme parks. This is an entirely new adventure created for Disney’s Animal Kingdom rather than another version of an existing Indiana Jones ride.
Story of Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent
The adventure begins as guests rendezvous with Dr. Indiana Jones, who is exploring a mysterious temple near a cenote, an underground cave that was once filled with water.
According to local legend, a passage near the cenote leads directly into the Maya Underworld. Protecting that passage is a giant serpentine creature known as the Tsukán.
Things don't exactly go according to plan.
During the adventure, riders are unexpectedly pulled through a portal and transported into the Underworld. From there, they'll need to escape a series of dangers that include monstrous bats, enormous scorpions, fire, and, because this is Indiana Jones we're talking about, snakes.
The Tsukán won't simply make one appearance. Disney says guests will encounter the serpent throughout the attraction, eventually leading to a major final confrontation.
The Tsukán Audio-Animatronics Figure
One of the most ambitious elements revealed for Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent is the enormous Tsukán Audio-Animatronics figure.
The serpent is being sculpted by hand and is massive enough to tower over the Imagineers working on it. Disney hasn't revealed exactly how the figure will move or how guests will encounter it during the ride, but it will play an important role throughout the attraction and in its finale.
Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones
Indiana Jones himself will also appear as an Audio-Animatronics figure, and Harrison Ford is serving as the model for the character.
Imagineering is using a digital model of Ford to develop the figure, bringing his likeness to an Indiana Jones theme park attraction for the first time.
Ford shared the news himself while discussing the new attraction, making this a particularly notable detail for fans who have followed his adventures as Indiana Jones on the big screen.
An Original Indiana Jones Adventure for Animal Kingdom
Although Disney fans may recognize some similarities between this attraction and other Indiana Jones adventures, Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent has been designed specifically for Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
The Maya setting, supernatural creatures, connection to nature, and original Tsukán storyline are all intended to make this adventure part of the larger Tropical Americas experience while still delivering the temples, archaeological mysteries, close calls, and snakes associated with Indiana Jones.
Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent will be one of the major attractions in Tropical Americas, the new land replacing DinoLand U.S.A. at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
