While visiting Disney California Adventure recently, a friend and I decided to check out some of the food options in San Fransokyo Square and ended up enjoying a nice variety of flavors.
The area, which was formerly the home to the Pacific Wharf, features three unique counter service locations and a large shared seating area. Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill and Lucky Fortune Cookery are still around serving menus that are not too different from before. However, Pacific Wharf Cafe has become Aunt Cass Cafe with a menu that still highlights soups and sandwiches featuring bread from Boudin Bakery.
Since we hadn’t eaten at any of the restaurants since the changeover to San Fransokyo, we decided to grab a bite (or two) from each location.
We started with two appetizers at Lucky Fortune Cookery, the Golden Bao Bun [$8.99] and the Pot Stickers [$8.49].
We both enjoyed the crispy pot stickers, filled with vegetables and chicken. I think those may have been my favorite dish of the afternoon. The fried bar bun was filled with ground pork and vegetables, then topped with sweet mayo, furikake and green onions. While I thought the bun was okay, my friend enjoyed this dish the most.
Next, we headed to Cocina Cucamonga for the QuesaBirria [$12.49]. The classic tacos are filled with braised beef and cheese and served with consume on the side.
If you enjoy this style of tacos, you will be pleased. While the dish was a little greasy and may be heavy for a midday meal, they were definitely delicious. The cheesy goodness of birria tacos are always a favorite.
Finally, we stopped at Aunt Cass Cafe, where we wanted something different from the standard sandwich or soup in a bread bowl. While I’m not a huge fan of sushi, we decided that we had to try the California Roll Sandwich with garlic chips [$12.49].
The sandwich was served on super soft milk bread and was filled with shrimp and crab salad, wasabi mayo, yakisoba sauce, and topped with masago. While this wasn’t necessarily our favorite item we had, this was the biggest surprise. This tasted exactly like a California Roll. The flavors were perfect, and had the somewhat mushy texture not been an issue for me, this may have been at the top of my list. Still, I kept going back for more.
Between the two of us, we finished all of the appetizers and both entrees, except for the garlic chips which went mostly uneaten. With all of the other deliciousness going on, they just didn’t pack enough flavor.
Just a side note: we used Mobile Order and were able to time our orders so that they were all ready within 10 minutes of each other. I went restaurant to restaurant picking up the orders and bringing them back to the table, while my friend too pictures and waited patiently.
We barely scratched the surface for food options in San Fransokyo Square, so I’m sure we’ll be back. Do you have a favorite restaurant or food item in San Fransokyo Square?
