As the Walt Disney World Resort got ready to reopen this morning following yesterday’s early closures to prepare for the possible arrival of Hurricane Dorian, animal handlers at Disney’s Animal Kingdom were busy delivering a new eland calf.
Given the timing of the birth in relationship to the storm, the calf was named Doppler.
A full exam will happen soon to determine the calf’s height, weight, and gender, but both mom and calf are doing well, and Doppler has taken his or her first steps. Both, however, will stay backstage for a few weeks before joining the rest of the herd.
Doppler is part of a species survival plan in partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
