Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ Poised to Beat Opening Weekend Box Office Estimates, Break Records

After breaking records for early ticket presales, Marvel’s Black Panther is set to top $210 million over the long President’s Day weekend.

Initial estimates had Black Panther topping out at $120 for the weekend, but after previews on Thursday evening brought in $25.2 million, breaking records for a February opening, estimates were adjusted to $200 million. In addition to breaking the February record, Thursday’s numbers were the second-largest preview ever for a Marvel film.

Friday’s numbers (that include Thursday previews) topped $76 million, giving Black Panther the 8th biggest opening day ever, and the third biggest for a Marvel film.

The record for President’s Day weekend is currently held by Deadpool with $152 million and Black Panther should have no problem besting those numbers.

The film focuses on King T’Challa of Wakanda who, after the death of his father, returns home to the isolated, yet technologically advanced nation, to take his rightful place on the throne, but must battle an old enemy that puts the fate of Wakanda, and the entire world, at risk.
