Let me start with the disclaimers:
Disclaimer #1-up until a month ago, I hadn’t seen Guardians of the Galaxy….the first one…and I still haven’t seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. That said…[spoiler alert] I really enjoyed this attraction.
Disclaimer #2-I was invited to experience this attraction during a limited media preview before the attraction opened.
A little background…when I rode the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, it wasn’t because I was a fan of the television show. I didn’t really even pay attention to the decor in the lobby. The story, for me, was secondary. I rode the Tower of Terror for that drop sequence…and I LOVED the drop sequence here in California.
The new attraction still has an awesome drop sequence…or six…plus has brought in the humor of the Guardians franchise.
The plot, however, is a little contrived and overly complicated, so I will do my best to explain.
As you enter the building itself, you get a glimpse at quite a bit of Tivan’s collection. Marvel fans should have a field day in here.
At the far end of the room is a huge screen, playing a video (on a loop) that introduces us to the Collector and his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. For those of you (us) that aren’t as familiar with the Guardians, the video gives you a bit of their personality and drops in the important plot point that Rocket the Racoon has escaped from every prison he’s been in…and is already trying to escape this one.
Your next stop is the Collector’s office, but not before being introduced to a scanning procedure (aka convoluted plot point). Before entering the office, guests must raise both hands to be scanned…..this will be important later.
The office is where it gets fun!
By the time you’ve reached the office, Rocket has escaped from his enclosure and made his way to the office to ask for your help.
An awesome audio-animatronic Rocket shares his plans and recruits your help in breaking out the rest of his Guardian friends. Remember the whole plot point about scanning the hands? Well, Rocket’s hands won’t scan, so that’s why he needs you.
Once you’re through the maintenance bay and on the gantry lift, Rocket will hop on top, take the elevator up to the generator on the roof, blow the generator to kill the power to the enclosures, and rescue his friends.
Once you’re secure in your seats…pull on those yellow straps…the ride begins, but within seconds, Rocket takes over and the elevator zooms straight to the top of the shaft, booming one of six different classic tunes.
During the ride, you’ll experience multiple drops along with several different scenes featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy. There is so much going on in those scenes, it’s impossible to catch it all.
So far, I’ve experienced “Burning Love” by Elvis Presley and “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5. Each song has a different drop profile and a different mix of Guardians scenes. Though some scenes are repeated during different songs, they may be in a different order.
Between the adrenaline rush of the drop sequence and the craziness of the Guardians, you can’t help but come off of the attraction laughing and smiling. While all of the Guardians have their moments, I think Drax is my favorite.
After experiencing the new attraction, I have a whole new appreciation for the Guardians and I’m ready to go again….with a Fastpass. Wait…maybe HE can get me in.
