Beloved Gorilla Gino Passes Away at 44 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Gino, a cherished Western lowland gorilla and one of the original animal residents of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, has passed away at the age of 44. Known for his calm demeanor, strong leadership, and contributions to gorilla conservation, Gino was a guest favorite and an iconic figure at the park for almost three decades.

Gino was a part of Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail since Animal Kingdom’s opening day – April 22nd, 1998. He quickly became a central figure there, where guests could often spot him sitting peacefully, observing his troop or playfully interacting with the younger gorillas.

Over the years, Gino fathered 14 offspring, contributing significantly to the population of Western lowland gorillas under professional care. Two of his daughters, Grace and Ada, still reside at Animal Kingdom, carrying on his legacy.

Gino played an important role in advancing animal care practices. Due to his intelligence and trust in his caretakers, he participated in medical training that allowed him to undergo cardiac ultrasounds without anesthesia; an innovation that helped improve gorilla health monitoring worldwide. Gino’s cooperation made him a model in behavioral and medical training programs adopted by other accredited zoos and sanctuaries.

He was also featured in the Disney+ series Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which celebrated his birthday and highlighted his gentle nature and impressive legacy.

Despite his status as the silverback, Gino was often a goofball and engaged with the people and animals around him. He loved to be the center of attention and was known to make eye contact with Park guests and interact with children through the viewing panel of his habitat.

Rohde’s Tribute

Joe Rohde, the former Walt Disney Imagineer who led the creation of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram:

“Gino the gorilla has passed away. He was the silverback leader of the gorillas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom for a generation. Gino was a true alpha male. He was powerful, gentle, humorous, kind, a patient partner to his minders, a great father, and a great model for the young males in his life… I prefer to remember him like this, not huge and powerful, but wandering peacefully beneath the trees, a creature in the midst of his kingdom. He will be missed.”

Gino’s life was a living testament to the values of conservation, education, and animal welfare; core to Disney’s mission and to the larger global effort to protect critically endangered species like the Western lowland gorilla. Our thoughts are with his caretakers and anyone who knew him.
